Lawang Sewu is a former NIS (Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij) company head office (Gedung Lawang Sewu), Semarang.

Tugu muda, a monumet dedicated to the Semarangese youth who fight against the Japanese occupation troops in Indonesia during the WW II.

Semarang Sketchers in the front of City Hall

Parade of Ogogh ogoh, a Balinese festival prior to the New Year Eve of Caka Calendar.

Ogoh ogoh is a statue of Butha Kala, a demon.

The Balinese people in Semarang had the parade started from the City Hall and finished at the city square, Simpang Lima.

The member of Semarang Sketch Club attended the festival to draw on location and record the spirit to enter the new year to come in Caka Calendar.

Looking forward to 2011 New Year's Eve Party, seasonal street business, group of paper trumpet vendors are lining up at the streets close to Simpang5, a public open space, where, beside in the restos and hotels, most of the Semarangese people will celebrate it.

Here are my sketches of the street trumpet vendors at A. Yani Street, just hundreds metres from the 'epicentrum', the Simpang5.

My Small Water Color Set.

Small pastilles metal box and plastic caps.

Double tape is used to attach the caps onto the internal bottom of the metal box.

Then choose the color we want.

The small box of six colors watercolor and A6 sketchbook ... perfect combination.

Try it out on my last year sketch.

This is the small set of six colors, that will be very easy to bring it on the go. I make it from a small metal tin of pastilles can, sized at 65 x 43 mm.

First the small metal box attracted me at near the cashier in the supermarket. I bought it another day then, and thinking of how I can put a watercolors there. One day at home I found that there's a small plastic cap (Dia. 18 mm) in the bottle of my Chinese ink which I was sure that it can be used to hold the water color. I work it out , the small metal box of the pastilles can accommodate six plastic caps, this means that I can have six colors in this small set. I have already had two bottles of Chines Ink so I need to buy four more.

I use double tape to glue the plastic caps onto the internal bottom of the metal box. The pan looks great … I really love this.

I then choose six colors of tubed watercolor and squeeze them into the place. It looks great and perfect to combined it with a small sketchbook.

Asal e aku kesengsem karo wadah pastilles iki ing supermarket, iku di pajang cedak karo kasir e. Aku mbayangke yen wadah cilik iku iso diisi karo watercolor … mestik leep tenan, tapi aku isih durung ngerti piye supoyo iso yo. Sawijining dino ing omah aku nyadari yen tutup plastik sing ono ing tinta bak botolan mbok menowo iso dienggo. Sa wis e tak cobo cobo aku yakin tenan yen iso … dadi kotak Pastilles kuwi iso di isi enem tutup plastik. Tutup plastik kuwi njur tak templek no nggo double tape marang dasaran e kotak pastilles kuwi. Wah … jan kethok keren banget. Sa wis e kuwi njur tak isi karo watercolor sing tak jupuk ke tko sing tube.

Yen di enggo karo buku gambar cilik jan pas banget. Enteng e nggambar di njobo yen ngene ki … ayo kono gek ndang di gambari bukune ...

I can still see a lot of MB 911, so called as Mercy bagong by local people because of its nose, on the road transporting the goods.

While the lorry with the logs is also a lot I can find on the road, they are from the port and take the logs to the warehouse located in many places in the outside of the city.

Gang Baru Street Bazaar with a Chinese temple in the background.

Gg. Baru (means New Alley) is a small street at China town in Semarang central Java. Every day this small street is filled with street seller. They start the activity at five in the morning and sell from vegetable to meat, cloth, food, fruits and many other things.

This traditional street market is absolutely an interesting place to sketch. Like last week, this time we also have Mr. Aryo Sunaryo , a lecturer in Art Department of Universitas Negeri Semarang.

A man is observing his fighting cock inside a bamboo cage.

Many buildings in the area of Old Semarang, also known as Little Nedherland, are left unused and ignored. It is not an exception to Jl. Kepodang (Kepodang street or Hoogendorp Straat in colonial time).

At this area, wild plants are growing on the old buildings and slowly deteriorating the structure, the cement come off the wall and expose the brick. The condition is becoming worst with the hot sun in dry season and monsoon rain in wet season and water intrusion.

However, everyday this area is always busy during the day, many people come to for their certain purpose : fighting their cocks.

Last Sunday (Sept 26th 2010) 'Semarang Urban Sketchers' went there to meet up and sketching.

Immanuel Church - Jakarta

The construction began on the birthday of King Willem I on August 24, 1835 and lasted four years until August 24, 1839. The church was then named Willemskerk. During the Japanese occupation the church was a repository of the ashes of Japanese soldiers killed in the war. In 1948 the church was renamed Immanuel Church and today this black domed church offers sermons in Indonesian, English and Japanese.

BRT (Bus Rapid Transport) is a commuter system in Semarang. As I live in the eastern and work in the western of the city I usually use this bus to get my office. This daytrip takes about 1 hour 20 mnt and I sometime do the sketching while the bus moves.

Here are two small pieces of paper that are a ticket to ride the bus, I use them to capture some passengers.

Using a ballpoint and I have to deal with the bus shake as it moves, accelerate and brake thru an overcrowded traffic.

I went to a funeral of a relative last Monday, 23rd August 2010 who passed away on Sunday evening. Try to remember what attracted my eyes when I was there ... a floral ornament.

There were two red flowers I don't know the name, then a Kenanga ( Canangium odorata ), Jasmine and also a Pandan leaf (Pandanus amaryllifolius) that is folded like an accordion.

Pappelik or Panuman in Pure Girinata Semarang. Pure is a Balinese shrine. Pappelik is a sacntum that serve as a communal seat of the gods when they descend from heaven on the occasion of a festival.

The piramid shape building is TVRI Semarang, Televisi Republik Indonesia, regional station of Central Java, established on a hill in the eastern Semarang is a TV station owned and managed by the government. Show up in the background is munt Ungaran and a ricefield is in the foreground. With an expressive approach using a brush pen and watercolour on my Kokuyo sketchbook. The sketch I did yesterday (14th August 2010) and I added to this post.

In the front of former NIS office in the colonial era in Indonesia, there's Tugu muda, a monumet dedicated to the Semarangese youth who fight against the Japanese occupation troops in Indonesia during the WW II.

Now known as Gdung Lawang Sewu, it was an office building of Nederlands-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS) in the Dutch Colonial time. Built in 1904 and completed in 1907 on the area called Wilhelmina Plein.

This is my sketch I did in the Warehouse at Kawasan Industri Wijaya Kusuma Semarang. The truck was from Jepara , a town renowed its wooden furniture indusrty. There 's a 40ft hicube container that was being stuffed when I did the skecth. In the bg is the warehouse of Yamaha.

'SEDERHANA' is a Padang Restaurant that serve Padang cuisine, a West Sumatra cooking. This restaurant is located in Jalan Pandanaran Semarang. The building is attractive with the style of West Sumatran Gadang house.

Phinisi is a wooden vessel from South Sulawesi (Celebes). It is built on the beach with wood that come from the forest in Sulawesi or kalimantan (Borneo). Teak (tectona grandis sp) is the most preferred wood but Ulin (iron wood) and Bangkirai (yellow balau) is also used. Please note if it is made from tectona gradis, the wood are not from Kalimantan.

Phinisi is used both as transport and cargo as well.

A man worked to clean the Citibank building. When I was sketching other subject on this location, suddenly I saw two people went down from the top of the building, hanging on the ropes.They clean the building and really worked well on it, where I can see the A and B test (After and Before cleaned) .

Sweet Manggo on the Streets of Semarang

Not only fruit, you can find many kind of food offered on the side walk of the street in Semarang. As the fruit is seasonal the street fruit stall's sale is always changing troughout the year. In October all of the them sell only manggo.
The street stall is usualy made from bamboo construction with blue or orange tent as a shade. Parasol is also used. Some are based on a small pick up car and can move over.

Beside the street fruit stall in the street you can buy the same fruit in a convenience and modern places such as at Matahari supermarket, Ciputra Mall, Java Mall, Carefour, Giant, Makro and many other shopping malls or special fruit shops.

Using a Faber Castell Ecco Pigment and also Staedtler Triplus Roller I made some sketches on a Hotel Memo book 10x10cm. The logo of the hotel is printed soft in the mid of the page and on the bottom there is a hotel address and other contact info. It was nice to work on it . . . something that I didn't think before.

Street Food Stalls ... you can find them at all over the street in Indonesia. Some are stationary and some are mobile. The Mobile street food stall usually has a pair of wheels, so it is easy to move it over, or on the bike/motor bike. Some are just carried by the person who sells the food. They sell various food from fresh fruits such as 'rujak', noodle, nasi goreng, ice cream, siomay, burger, bakso or beefball. Some foods are sold pre cooked and others are cooked on order.
